Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the library located?
The Fort Lewis Mesa branch library is located inside the Fort Lewis Mesa elementary school. The school library and the public library share the same space. There are sections for the school's materials and sections for the public library materials. Community members have access to the public library after school hours from 2-7pm during the school year and from 1-7pm during the summer.
How has it been funded in the past?
Prior to January 2018, the library was funded in conjunction with the county, the Friends of the Durango Public Library, and the 9-R school district. After January 1, 2018, all of the funding was taken over by the school district and the Friends of the Library. Alternative funding is needed as soon as possible to keep the library open in 2019 and beyond.
Can volunteers run the library?
While volunteers are appreciated, Colorado State Library Law states that a public library must have paid staff. Volunteers can help to a limited extent but they cannot do the work of the staff. For example, they can assist with programs, but they can't do the actual planning. They can help with shelving and shelf reading but not checking out or ordering library materials.
How can I help?
Helping secure sustainable funding is our greatest need. One-time donations are also greatly needed. Connect with the Fort Lewis Mesa Library Advocates to meet monthly, brainstorm ideas, receive assignments, and actively work toward securing the needed funding.
